One of our SH&W members is an active participant in Saratoga P.L.A.N., a non-profit organization working to protect and conserve open spaces in Saratoga County.

She recently informed us of a great new program they have put together called “Preserve Passport”. This is a fun, educational program that encourages children of all ages to get outside and explore the beautiful nature areas and trails that Saratoga P.L.A.N. has worked so hard to conserve. Did you know Saratoga County has over 10 public preserves and trails that are open for hiking?! What a great way to get active with your kids or grandkids!

If you (or the kids) are at all familiar with “letterboxing”, this is a very similar concept.

How the “Passport” works:

  • Pick up a Passport Book for each child (you can pick yours up at SH&W!)
  • Choose from 1 of 11 public preserves in the passport and follow driving directions included in passport book
  • Before you go, download and print the clues (listed on the Saratoga P.L.A.N. website) to get to the hidden box. Use the rubber stamp inside the hidden box to mark the stamp on your passport. OR, list 3 different species you’ve found at each preserve.
  • If you list 3 species or collect stamps from 5 or more of the preserves listed in the Passport and return the passport to Saratoga P.L.A.N. – win a FREE T-SHIRT!!

We think this is a great way to promote physical activity among the younger population, get outside for some fresh air and take advantage of the 3,387 acres of protected land Saratoga P.L.A.N. has preserved!
